The lecture "The Sacred Space of the Orthodox Church" is part of the lecture series "Sacred Art."
Event overview
The lecture "The Sacred Space of the Orthodox Church" is the first in the lecture series "Sacred Art" at the Narva Museum's open lecture hall.
During the lecture, we will explore the definitions of the sacred, the peculiarities of the interior space of the Orthodox Church, and the means of its creation. We will discuss the meanings of terms such as hierotopy and hierophany, sanctus and saccer, as well as the interrelation of altar and dome paintings. We will learn how individual structures over time have transformed into iconographic symbols. The lecture has a philosophical-cultural character and introduces the basic principles of the arrangement of the Orthodox Church.
The lecturer is Julia Khlystun, a research fellow at the Narva Museum. For many years, Julia has been studying the painting programs of Orthodox churches in Ukraine built in the late 20th to early 21st centuries and has authored numerous scholarly articles. Originally from Ukraine, Julia joined the Narva Museum in early March, bringing her expertise and narrow scientific specialization, thereby shedding light on previously unexplored aspects of the city's sacred culture.
The lecture will be conducted in Russian. Tickets are available for pre-sale.
The lecture "The Sacred Space of the Orthodox Church" is part of the lecture series "Sacred Art," consisting of 5 lectures.
