Лecture by Lyubov Nikolaevna Kiseleva, Professor Emeritus of Russian Literature and longtime Head of the Department of Russian Literature and Slavic Studies at Tartu University. Author of around 200 scholarly works on the history of Russian culture from the late 18th to the 19th centuries, as well as the book "Estonian-Russian Cultural Space" (Estonian edition: Eesti - vene kultuuriruum. Tartu, 2017; Russian edition – Moscow, 2018).
The lecture discusses the remarkable life journey of a peasant boy from a poor hamlet in Viljandi County, who, by his own will and talent, obtained a higher artistic education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, becoming a renowned artist, a professor at the Academy, and a court painter. Johan Köler (1826-1899) always took pride in his Estonian heritage and considered it his mission to serve his people. His activities within the circle of St. Petersburg Estonian patriots are examined.
