Narva Castle
Overview
More than 700 years old, Hermann Castle in Narva has been ruled over by Danes, Germans, Swedes and Russians through the centuries, but now finally belongs to Estonians. It obtained its current appearance during the time of the Livonian Order from the 14th-16th centuries. Badly damaged in the Second World War, the castle was significantly restored in the 1970 and 1980s before opening as a museum, which simultaneously offered a permanent exhibition showcasing the history of Narva as well as almost a dozen temporary exhibitions.
In June 2020, the full reconstruction of Narva Castle was completed within the framework of the 'Opening of the Border Castle Discovery Centre’ project, and the east wing of the castle, to which visitors previously did not have access, can now also be visited. Summer 2020 saw the opening of a new permanent exhibition in the castle, focusing on its history from the arrival of the first Danes on the banks of the Narva River up to the present day. The Estonian Museums Festival takes place in Narva every autumn, as part of which the best exhibitions from Estonian museums that have been brought here remain open until the end of the year.
Concerts and conferences take place in the castle's magnificent vaulted knights' meeting and banquet hall and also in the slightly smaller hall in the north wing, while the 51-metre-high Tall Hermann Tower offers views over Narva, the Kreenholm factory and Ivangorod Fortress across the river in Russia.
In summer, the Northern Yard, an artisans’ history centre, operates out of the north yard of the castle, while the Western Yard serves as a venue for large open-air events and is a popular place for spending free time and walking. Linne Herb Garden is also located here, inspired by Swedish botanist Carl Linne’s idea of enhancing old spaces by creating both ornamental and utility gardens. However, in the artillery tower, located in the north-west corner of the Western Yard, is Narva Museum's restaurant Rondeel, which is the only restaurant in Narva to feature in the White Guide rankings of the best places to eat in Estonia.
NB! A mask must be worn by all persons 12 years of age and older.

Krenholm excursion
Krenholm excursion
Narva Museum organises excursions to Krenholm both by reservation and at 12:00 every Sunday from April till the end of October2022 wherein visitors gain an overview of the factory's more than 160 years of history in the midst of monumental industrial architecture. 2021 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Knoop (1821-1894), the founder of the Kreenholm industrial complex and settlement.
There is no equal to Krenholm – there was nothing else like this mammoth company with its more than 10,000 workers overlooking the foaming falls of Narva in either Russia or Europe as a whole. Although the machines in the factory no longer operate, workers no longer beaver away in its workshops and the falls are only open a few times a year, Krenholm's industrial architecture still fascinates people, recalling the glory days of this huge industrial park.
Led by a museum guide, the tour starts at the old Krenholm gates opposite Joala 32. While on the tour you can leave your car or bus in the free car park next to the gates. The tour lasts for around 90 minutes. During this time you explored the closed-off grounds of the factory and visit the old factory building itself, where you can take a look at a large knitting hall to better understand the scale of the work that was done here. The total length of the tour route is around 2.5 km. Since Krenholm is an industrial complex and the tour mainly takes place outdoors, please dress for the weather.
