The lecture will explore the iconographic tradition dedicated to the celebration of Easter. Through examples of iconographic monuments from the 15th to the 19th centuries, we will discuss the peculiarities of iconographic language and symbolism of the images of the Crucifixion, Descent into Hades, and Resurrection of Christ. We will compare iconographic themes in Eastern and Western churches and learn about the fundamental differences in depicting the same event, as well as their iconographic unity.

Maria Smorzhevskikh-Smirnova is a cultural historian, PhD, and the director of the Narva Museum. She is the author of scholarly publications and books on the history of Russian culture, the Petrine era, and Russian baroque iconography.
