Narva Castle

 

In the summer of 2020, the renovated Narva Castle opened its doors to visitors. The new permanent exhibition is dedicated to the 700-year-old Narva Castle, standing on the border of East and West, and its history. The exposition is located on two floors of the convention building and conceals many interactive discoveries, multimedia solutions, tightly intertwined with historical exhibits. The price of tickets to Narva Castle includes the use of audio guides for the permanent exhibition of the museum.

The eastern wing of the castle, previously inaccessible to anyone except the museum staff, is open to guests. Also, guests of the museum can climb to the upper gallery of the convention building and the Long Herman Tower, which offers a magnificent view of the city of Narva, the border river and Russia.

Movement through the new exposition of the castle is available for people with special needs, thanks to the two elevators installed in the convention building.

Narva Castle is open Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 (ticket sales end at 17:00).

History of Narva Castle

The tour pays special attention to the history of Narva Castle: it tells about the emergence and formation of the castle complex, as well as its inseparable connection with the history and life of the city. The castle is considered from the point of view of its use in different periods and the relationship between the castle and the city in peacetime and wartime.

Legends of Old Narva

The history of the most famous castle, located on the border of Estonia and Russia, dates back more than 700 years. Over the centuries, it was formed from reliable facts and ancient legends, which reflected the difficult fates of the people who lived here. Citizens and guests of the city have the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of the city from an unexpected side, hearing stories about the incredible beauty of the Narva Virgin, about the bravery of young Olaf, about friendship and enmity, about love and thirst for revenge. Guests will enjoy a journey through the unknown and gloomy corners of the castle shrouded in darkness, exciting legends and, at the end of the evening, a glass of wine by the burning fireplace.

The program is available for order all year round. It is held in Estonian, Russian and English, and on special request in German.

Art Gallery

 

The Art Gallery of the Narva Museum is located on the Gloria Bastion, in an old building of a warehouse of provisions and weapons, built in 1777. Today it is one of the few buildings of the old city that survived the devastating events of the Second World War. In 1991, the first exhibition was opened in the restored and specially redesigned building for the museum space, this day can be called the Birthday of the Art Gallery - a branch of the Narva Museum.

Currently, the art gallery boasts the exhibitions introducing the artistic heritage of Estonia and Narva, contemporary professional art and areas related to visual culture. In 2021, a permanent exhibition "Life or Karma? Stories of Narva", which presents about 200 masterpieces: from the Baroque era to the present, as well as numerous materials from the museum collection of photographs and textiles. Independent tour of the permanent exhibition is facilitated by audio guides that guests can use on their smart devices.

The art gallery pays special attention to exhibitions and mediation in all areas of art. Pre-schoolers and school students are offered a wide range of museum educational programs. We also offer family days, excursions, art evenings for adults, city camps for children and traditional events such as Artist's Day and Museum Night are held.

Tour of the Art Gallery

A tour of the Art Gallery of the Narva Museum includes a visit to the permanent exhibition "Life or Karma? Stories of Narva", as well as tour of temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition presents about 200 works from the Baroque era to the present, as well as numerous materials from the museum collection of Krenholm photographs and textiles. The participants have a great opportunity to learn about the history of Narva through the theme of power, war, modernization and the life of ordinary people. During the tour, we will also talk about the artistic life of Narva from the moment of the formation of the first art collection to the present day.
