Archaeological excavations conducted during restoration works have revealed previously unknown structures. One of them is a vaulted room with two openings above it. According to initial assessments by archaeologists, it may date back to the 19th century. However, parts of a wall from an even older structure from the 17th century are visible next to it. The purpose of these structures has not yet been determined. The findings will be conserved, and access to them preserved for further study.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with the findings from the Western Courtyard at the open exhibition "Archaeological Fieldwork in Estonia 2022" in Narva Castle. The exhibition can be visited with a museum ticket.
The entire Western Courtyard reconstruction project is carried out as part of the "Estonian External Border Program of the European Union 2014-2020" with funds from the European Union and the state. The ER3 project will conclude in November 2023.
The total budget of the ER3 project is 5,933,995.36 euros. The budget portion allocated for SA Narva Muuseum is 4,262,091.52 euros, of which 3,697,790.60 euros are provided as EU support, and 564,300.92 euros are the state contribution.
