Event overview

The lecture "The Hidden Semantics of Symbolic Images in Monumental Church Painting" is the third in the lecture series "Sacred Art" hosted by the Narva Museum.

All Christian art, particularly iconography, has been deeply symbolic since the earliest centuries of its existence. This symbolism is inseparable from religious art because the spiritual reality it expresses cannot be conveyed in any other way but through symbols. To gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind church murals and iconography, the lecturer proposes examining them as a specific type of text from the perspective of semiotics (the study of signs). Attendees will become acquainted with the lecturer's proposed classification of symbolic signs in monumental church painting.

The lecturer, Yuliya Khlystun, a research fellow at the Narva Museum, has dedicated many years to studying the painting programs of Orthodox churches in Ukraine, built from the late 20th to the early 21st centuries. She is the author of numerous scholarly articles and hails from Ukraine. In early March, Y. Khlystun joined the Narva Museum, bringing her expertise and narrow scientific specialization to shed light on previously unexplored aspects of the city's sacred culture.

The lecture will be conducted in Russian.

Tickets are available for pre-sale.
