Archaeological Fieldwork in Estonia 2023 – Traveling Exhibition at Narva Museum
Event overview
The exhibition “Archaeological Fieldwork in Estonia 2023” has arrived at the Narva Museum. It will be on display at the Narva Castle from October 16 to December 1, 2024.
Every year, 200–250 archaeological investigations take place in Estonia. At the beginning of the year, the Estonian Archaeological Society organizes a traveling exhibition that showcases the most significant and exciting archaeological fieldwork of the past year.
According to the Heritage Protection Board, archaeologists conducted fieldwork at 230 different locations in 2023. Most of these were smaller-scale rescue excavations whose significance in understanding the past becomes clearer over time. In contrast, initial results of larger projects can be presented soon after the completion of the investigations and processing of the finds.
The exhibition features 19 studies from across Estonia, including work at burial sites, ancient and medieval fortresses, settlement sites, medieval and modern cities, and maritime locations. Among the fieldwork conducted in Narva, studies from the construction of Stockholm Square are highlighted. During the archaeological excavations in the center of the city near the Narva Town Hall, where no cemetery was previously known, human remains were discovered.
The exhibition will be on display at Narva Castle from October 16 to December 1, 2024.
