Narva Eesti Selts – 150

This year, the Narva Estonian Society celebrates its 150th anniversary, marking a long history of cultural and social activity! Since its founding in 1874, the society has brought together theater, music, and educational enthusiasts, becoming an integral part of Narva's cultural life. Let us recall how, a century ago, on November 2, 1924, citizens marched proudly along Westervalli Street, celebrating the society's 50th anniversary, and consider how many events have unfolded since then.

The anniversary celebration in 1924 began with a welcome speech from board member Johannes Süster, who introduced those present to the history and activities of the society. The initiator of the Estonian society in Narva (then known as "Ilmarine"), which brought together theater and music lovers, was Hans Ots. On November 3, 1874, the society held its first formal gathering, where Pastor Ferdinand Tannenberg gave a speech and blessing. During this meeting, leaders were elected, and poet Johan Weitzenberg was chosen as the first chairman of the "Ilmarine" society.

For many years, the society had no permanent home; however, in 1905, thanks to the efforts and support of the society's chairman, Dr. Johan Janes, they finally acquired their own building (Westervalli 4). The Estonian Society organized numerous events in Narva, including educational lectures, exhibitions, and sales. The society had its own orchestra, choir, and drama club, with performances held not only in their venue but also in the city theater. The society also became the organizer of Narva’s song festivals (1892, 1895, 1912, 1924), which attracted attention throughout Estonia.

During the 50th-anniversary celebrations, congratulatory telegrams were read, including a message from the President of the National Assembly, Jaan Tõnisson. The festive evening concluded with a private event for invited guests.
