27.10.2024 17:00 / Narva Castle

Event overview

Performed by the Baroque ensemble LaBande featuring Helis Naeris (mezzo-soprano), Melissa Jõesaar, Triin Veissmann (baroque violin), Tõnu Jõesaar (viola da gamba, baroque cello), and Kristiina Are (harpsichord).

The program features music from the court of Queen Christina of Sweden.
One could create an entire concert series dedicated to the music of Queen Christina’s court. This 17th-century ruler, known as the "Minerva of the North," was one of the greatest patrons of the fine arts during the High Baroque era. Among her close circle were some of the Enlightenment’s greatest thinkers, including René Descartes, rulers, a significant number of artists, and many composers such as A. Corelli, A. Scarlatti, A. Stradella, M. Marazzoli, G. Carissimi, and L. Rossi, among others.

In our concert program, "I Saw a Star Falling from the Sky," we aim to paint a musical portrait of this educated but controversial ruler’s inner world. Her life journey took many turns, leading to her abdication of the throne in 1654 and relocation to the Holy City.
The concert will feature vocal and instrumental works by composers directly connected to Queen Christina’s court, both in Sweden and in Rome.
