The team of the Narva Museum deeply mourns the untimely loss of our colleague, friend, true professional, and an outstanding expert on Narva — Senior Inspector of the Heritage Protection Department, Madis Tuuder.
We express our deepest condolences to Madis’ family, friends, and colleagues.
For the Narva Museum team, Madis was not only a colleague and an experienced mentor, but also a very dear person to us. He was distinguished by his sincere love for the heritage he studied and his ability to see the inseparable connection between historical periods and human destinies. It was often Madis who introduced us to remarkable people who still remembered pre-war Narva. Thanks to such connections, the Narva Museum’s collection has been enriched in recent years with very valuable materials and objects.
Madis himself possessed encyclopedic knowledge of the history and architecture of our region. His numerous publications became a true source of knowledge for specialists, and his book “From Cottage to Palace” has remained one of our most popular museum publications for six years.
Madis was an integral part of our museum’s life. We invited him to act as curator or co-curator of many of our exhibitions, to participate in scientific projects, deliver lectures, conduct tours, and—quite simply—to support us during the busy summer seasons.
Exactly one year ago, Madis Tuuder delivered a series of 16 lectures titled “History of Narva”, which he had specially prepared for the Narva Museum. Recordings of these lectures, as well as those of the project “Narva Wooden Baroque”, are available on the museum’s YouTube channel. We had many more plans for the future together.
We grieve deeply. This is an irreplaceable loss.
Rest in peace, dear Madis.
