Virgo Veldi graduated from the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School in 1988, where he studied under Villu Veski and Professor Olavi Kasemaa. He continued his studies at the Tallinn Conservatory (1993, Prof. Kasemaa), earned a master’s degree from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (1997, Prof. Kasemaa), and later from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (2004, Prof. Pekka Savijoki).
In 1990, Virgo Veldi won 3rd prize at the Wind Instrument Performers’ Competition in Tallinn, and in 1996 he received 1st prize and the audience award at the “Con Brio” young performers’ competition.
He has taught saxophone at the Georg Ots Music School and the Sibelius High School in Helsinki. Since 2001, he has been teaching saxophone at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and conducting masterclasses across Europe.
As a soloist, Virgo Veldi regularly performs at leading music festivals and collaborates with renowned conductors such as A. Ryabov, P. Saul, A. Heinpalu, N. Alekseev, T. Kaljuste, T. Leinataam, R. Joost, E. Pehk, Toomas Vavilov, and others.
Estonian composers such as Tõnu Kõrvits, Galina Grigorjeva, Toivo Tulev, René Eespere, and Pärt Uusberg have written works for him. He has given numerous chamber concerts both in Estonia and abroad. His stage partners include I. Ilja, R. Taal, P. Paemurru, M. Mikkolai, K. Ratasepp, T. Lepnurm, U. Krigul, A.-P. Lattik, I. Maide, J. Lutsoya, and others.
He has also participated in pop music projects with artists such as A. Veski, I. Linna, D. Benton, and others. He was a saxophonist in the ensemble 2QS for many years and from 1999 to 2014 was a member and artistic director of the saxophone quartet Saxest.
Jaan Ots graduated from the Tallinn Music School with specializations in piano and trumpet, and earned his bachelor’s degree in piano from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has won numerous youth competitions in Estonia and abroad on both instruments, including 1st prize at the “Steinway & Sons” young pianists’ competition in Hamburg (2003), 2nd prize and the EMCY special award at the “Step Towards Mastery” competition in St. Petersburg (2005), and 1st prize along with two special awards (from Estonian Radio and the Pärnu City Orchestra) at the Estonian Wind Instrument Performers’ Competition (2008).
Jaan began studying conducting privately under Professor Olev Oja and continued as an elective subject at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Professor Paul Mägi. He earned his master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (Prof. Leif Segerstam). During his studies, he also interned at the Paris Conservatory (CNSM) in the conducting class of Zsolt Nagy.
He has participated in masterclasses with Eri Klas, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Susanna Mälkki, Thomas Sanderling, and at the Järvi Academy.
Jaan Ots has conducted ensembles such as the symphony orchestras of Jyväskylä and Lahti, the Finnish National Opera Orchestra, Camerata Hamburg, the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO), the Estonian National Opera Orchestra, the Pärnu City Orchestra, the Narva City Orchestra, and Klaaspärlimäng Sinfonietta. He has also worked as an assistant conductor with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and the Greek National Opera.
Jaan actively performs as a chamber musician, participating in various festivals as a guest artist and regularly giving concerts with the piano trio TEOS (Finland–Estonia) and the Frielinghaus Ensemble (Germany). With the latter, he has released three albums featuring German chamber music from different eras (Beethoven, Albrecht, Schweppe, Zeiber).
