"Icon Room" is the title of an exhibition showcasing one of the most fascinating collections in the Narva Museum’s art holdings.
The exhibition features icons from the 17th to early 20th century, which entered the museum through various paths:
- Icons confiscated at the Narva customs checkpoint during attempted illegal export,
- Icons evacuated from Narva to Rakvere during World War II,
- Sacred items rescued from destruction during the Soviet era.
A unique aspect of the exhibition is the juxtaposition of masterful examples of icon painting and rare iconography with simple, folk-style icons created far from major iconographic centers. These modest icons are now considered especially valuable and are typically found in private collections.
Special attention is also given to cast icons and crosses made in Old Believer workshops, decorated with enamel, as well as a large double-sided altar cross, similar to those found in Estonian Orthodox churches in the late 19th century.
NB! The tour is conducted in Estonian.
