Women of the Old Testament in Artistic Tradition: Beauty, Risk, and the Salvation of a People — Esther (RUS)
Event overview

The stories of the Old Testament often show how the fate of a single person can alter the course of history for an entire nation. One of the most striking examples is the story of Esther, a poor Jewish girl who became the queen of Persia and saved her people.
In this lecture, we will explore how theologians and artists have interpreted the figure of Esther, who embodied beauty, courage, and a willingness to take risks. We will also turn to the enigmatic figure of the Queen of Sheba: did she truly exist, and why has her image become one of the most popular themes in European art? Special attention will be given to how artists conveyed the importance, wealth, and wisdom of the Queen of Sheba, transforming biblical narratives into expressive visual imagery.
This lecture will show how, through the female figures of the Old Testament, art tells stories of choice, risk, and salvation—stories that remain relevant to this day.
