Event overview

Angels have always been among the most mysterious and captivating figures in Christian culture. In this lecture, we will explore how early Christian art established the visual canon for depicting angels; the role ancient Greece and its artistic traditions played in shaping the angelic image; and how angels transitioned from sacred spaces into secular art — from the Renaissance to the present day.

We will also discuss why angelic figures often oscillate between masculine and feminine traits, and how this “duality” has influenced art across different eras. This will be a journey through the centuries — from mosaics and icons to painting and sculpture — where the heavenly meets the earthly.
