Event overview

Rebekah and Ruth are among the most radiant and morally significant female figures of the Old Testament. Their stories lack outward drama, yet they are filled with profound inner meaning. These women embody the Old Testament moral ideal and, for centuries, have served as role models for their people.

In this lecture, we will explore how the destinies of Rebekah and Ruth unfold through faithfulness, conscious choice, and a readiness for sacrifice. Their actions determine not only their personal destinies but also the course of sacred history, becoming a path to blessing—for their families, their lineage, and an entire nation.

We will examine how Christian tradition has interpreted the figures of Rebekah and Ruth, and which aspects artists have highlighted when depicting these stories. Special attention will be given to artistic interpretations in painting, illuminated manuscripts, and iconography, where gesture, gaze, and composition convey the idea of moral choice. This lecture will show why the images of Rebekah and Ruth have remained relevant through the centuries.
