Would you like to learn how Narva – the only city in Estonia with three well-known historical coats of arms – tells its 640-year history through its symbols? Join a guided tour of the exhibition with the curator, Zurab Janes, Chief Curator of the Narva Museum, and discover the city’s “borderline” past through coats of arms, flags, and rare artifacts.

Both the state and the city have officially approved symbols – a flag and a coat of arms – which serve two important functions: they act as a representative emblem and reflect local identity. These are visual legacies that tell the story of the city through the centuries.

Narva is one of the few cities in Estonia that has had more than one coat of arms over the centuries. As a border city, it has belonged to different states, each of which created its own symbols. This exhibition explores the formation, meaning, and use of Narva’s symbols.

Museum artifacts and archival materials play a key role — objects that quietly but eloquently tell the story of symbolism. The exhibition features historical coats of arms and seals, coins minted in Narva during the Swedish era, items used by the city magistrate, and both official and unofficial objects bearing the city’s symbols.
