Voices in the Night: A Guided Walk through the Western Courtyard of Narva Castle (EST, RUS)
Event overview
The theme of this year’s Night of Museums, “Voices in the Night,” invites us to listen—not only to what is spoken aloud, but also to what has fallen silent over time. The Western Courtyard of Narva Castle is a place where the voices of different eras intersect: the footsteps of merchants, the commands of soldiers, the sound of the river, and the everyday life of townspeople once echoed here.

During this evening guided walk, we will journey through the history of Narva, viewing the city and its surrounding region as a living, multi‑voiced space. We will discuss the role of the castle in different historical periods and the people whose lives were connected to it—from medieval inhabitants to the present day.
We will also try to hear what often escapes attention: the voice of the Narva River as a force that shaped and connected the city. What was life like by the river before the castle was built? How did the river influence daily life, trade, and movement? What stories are carried by the water that has flowed here for centuries?
The tour raises questions about whose voices have endured over time and whose have been silenced. What stories do the walls tell, and what stories are told by silence? And what role can a museum play in making these voices audible once again?
This is a walk for those who are willing to listen—to history, to space, and to themselves.
